10 Steps while Transferring Ownership of a Used Car

Do you think that change of ownership of a used car is a daunting task? Well, it is not if you are strictly adhering to the protocols as per the set rules and regulations. Many of us own vehicles, which may appear obsolete to us. Also, you may contemplate gifting your vehicle to a family member. There is nothing wrong with it. You can always transfer the ownership of your car.

The vehicle registration in California must have been done in your name after you purchased the car. Well, for the transfer of title online or to transfer ownership of the car, the California Department of Motor Vehicles or CA DMV, identifies only the following as family members :

  • Parents
  • Siblings
  • Spouses
  • Children
  • Domestic partners
  • Grandparents
  • Grandchildren

When you are gifting a vehicle, if you sign on the title of your vehicle for another owner, you must submit the following to the recipient:

  • The vehicle title is duly attested by both the previous and the new owner. Moreover, the signatures of any lien attached to the vehicle, if relevant must be considered for the transfer of vehicle ownership online.
  • As a transferor, if you miss your vehicle title, an application for a duplicate copy of the transfer of title must be signed by both the transferor and the new owner.
  • If your vehicle is less than 10 years old, transferors must produce an odometer reading. Fill up a Vehicle/Vessel Title Transfer and Reassignment Form if your title does not contain any more space for the odometer mileage.
  • There is a facility for license plate renewal with tags. Moreover, submit a smog certification, unless you are gifting the car to a relative or your car is 4 model years or lesser and not diesel-powered.
  • Also, provide the necessary documents for car repair insurance.

The entire process should not consume more than a period of 5 days from the date of gifting the vehicle. Don’t forget to update the new owner about the mandatory smog check in Rancho Cucamonga.

This was all about gifting a car. Similarly, you must follow the protocols properly when someone is gifting you a car. The following steps must be adhered to while receiving a gifted vehicle

  • You must have to title and register your gifted vehicle within 10 days from the date of receiving the same.
  • Visit your local DMV for a DMV registration extension in California with all the necessary documents from the previous owner of the vehicle.
  • Provide a complete Statement of Facts to get fee exemptions for family transfers and smog certifications.
  • If you inherit a car submit an Affidavit for Transfer without Probate. You may have to submit other documents depending on your case. Get in touch with your local DMV for further information about this process.
  • Pay the title transfer fees i.e. $15 for the transferred title and $8 for the smog transfer fee. The payment forms accepted are cash, debit/credit card, cashier’s check, and money order.
  • Never ignore the significance of regular smog service in Rancho Cucamonga.

The first five steps are applicable when you are transferring the ownership. The last five steps are applicable if someone is transferring the ownership in your name. Under all circumstances, you must adhere to the rules and regulations.
