Important Tips to Check Your Vehicle Registration Status

You may check your vehicle registration in California renewal status by applying the CA DMV status tool. The system will respond with status messages that we’ll explain in this write-up.

The DMV registration status system is a diversified tool you can employ to know if your vehicle's registration renewal has been completed by the DMV, in real-time. Stay prepared with your vehicle's license plate number and the last three digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN). Enter the necessary details into the registration status tool with the zip code of the place where the vehicle is registered. A wide range of messages can be provided below, or the system will compute and display registration fees which you owe presently. If you think you've cleared your fees much before but the system still shows fees are pending, the problem must be addressed athe earliest as there could be late penalties accruing.

Wait for a few days for a post-registration renewal payment before you apply the tool for checking your vehicle's registration renewal status. Thspecific amount of time we suggest waiting depends on if you made your DMV registration renewal payment online or by mail. Paying online is the most ideal method to confirm your fees were received, as the DMV payment gateway hardly fails. After paying online, you can may the system check your registration status as quickly as 24 hours. Mailed check or money order payments, normally consume a week or fortnight to process. Hence give it a little more time. The DMV does not accept cash.

It is being assumed that the DMV has your accurate mailing address. If you recently shifted, consider that the USPS mail forwarding system does err, and mail gets lost frequentlyApply the status tool for checking the status of your vehicle's renewal and ascertain which course of action you should take to get your new tags at the earliest.

Paid Online

If you paid online, and haven’t received your new tags and registration card, it may so happen that the DMV mailed out your new registration card and sticker, but the USPS lost it or it was stolen. Apply the registration status tool to know whether you still owe fees. Confirm your renewal payment was debited from your bank or credit card account. If your payment has been debited from your account, and the system says "registration renewal fees not due", then go to your local DMV field office for a free replacement sticker and registration card. It may so happen that your registration has been lost in the mail. If you wish to avoid a DMV trip, ask for a replacement registration card and sticker online. A nominal fee is applicable. Check your vehicle's registration renewal status to decide. The messages that will be provided by the system are explained below.

Mailed Check or Money Order

If you paid your DMV renewal by check, wait for at least 3 weeks, and still haven’got your new registration card and sticker, we suggest applying the status tool to authenticate if your registration renewal has been processed, has any requirements pending, or has been completed. Contact your bank to know if your renewal payment check has been cleared.

If the system shows registration fees pending, then your check or money order never reached the DMV. Insufficient funds will lead to the same scenario as well. However, you won't be officially notified for at least 30 days after the check has bounced.

The response messages the DMV system will return are as follows-.

  1. TIP ALREADY SET ON RECORD - TIP means Transaction Already in Progress. This happens if a transaction has been done on a vehicle on a particular day, and the further transaction cannot be performed until 24 hours.

  1. CLEARING INQUIRY REQUIRED - This error message suggests your DMV fees have been paid, but you can't get your new sticker and registration card yetA requirement must be fulfilled by you before your renewal is finalized. Call the DMV at (800) 777-0133 to know the exact cause your vehicle needs a clearing Inquiry.

  1. EXCEEDS 44 FEE CODE LIMITATION - This error message implies the total DMV registration fees due exceed the maximum fees you could pay through the BPA third-party registration service provider program.

  1. DMV FEES ARE DUE - The system computes and displays renewal fees, considering you've given isufficient time (at least 3 weeks) between your DMV payment and applying our DMV fee calculator and the DMV never got your payment and your vehicle's registration renewal wasn’processed.

  1.  REGISTRATION RENEWAL NOT DUE - This message means your renewal fees have been paid and your vehicle's registration has been renewed.

  1. INVALID FIELD PRESENT (veh_gvw) - This error message signifies that the DMV requires rectification of your vehicle's weight status.

Vehicle registration renewal in California is an effortless task. You need not have to panic. Just get things done within time to avoid penalties of any kind.
